Computer Lessons at VOH Kitwe

IMG_0007
VOH Kitwe is committed to teaching the students basic computer skills. In this picture the grade 11 class is having a computer lesson with one of the VOH teachers instructing them. Students are excited when they acquire these skills because they are able to use them when they go for further education after high school; several have been able to get jobs using what they have learned so they can save up funds to go to college.

Gardening at VOH Malawi

It was another big week at VOH Malawi. Our gardener Gilbert and his helpers planted another 100 trees – peaches, bananas, oranges, and papayas. We are expecting of the 200 planted, we will have enough fruit to add a good portion of nutritious fruit to the children’s meals and maybe even enough to sell some and put the profits back into the Village! The trees will also be a great source of shade for the children in the years to come.

Sports Day!

The children at VOH Burundi had a special time together last week playing many different games and participating in sport’s day races. One of the activities was building a human pyramid! Everyone was excited to be together having lots of fun!

This past week VOH Mongo held the first Sports Day of 2014. All the children absolutely loved the day, despite being delayed for several hours because of very heavy rain and thunder. Once the storm cleared out, everything went smoothly. The kids had a blast competing in their races, playing netball and Frisbee, and then cheering on the teachers and community members as they raced. Sports Day is always such a highlight and the morning rain did not keep any children away, they were excited and ready to get going!

Meet Willin

Meet Willin Achola Otieno, she has been both a student and a teacher at VOH Kenya. Willin grew up in a small rural village called Obumba. Both her parents passed away when she was very young and sadly, as a result she has no memory of them. She was taken in by her grandmother and was later enrolled into the VOH Kenya program at 8 years of age. Willin worked very hard in school and got good grades. When she finished secondary school, she decided she wanted to become a teacher and help other children who are in the same situation.

In 2013, Willin graduated from her education program and is now teaching Swahili, math, science, and English from grades 4-8 at VOH Kenya! Willin is a real blessing to the children in her classes because she understands the things they are going through and brings a living example of hope for a brighter future to the students.

VOH Zimbabwe “Fun Day!”

IMG_0009

Last week at VOH Zimbabwe was “Fun Day” for the children in the three feeding programs – one on-site at the Village and two others in the neighboring community. These children have very little in their lives. Our ‘Fun Day’ celebrated the end of each school term, is the biggest day of the year for them!

Over 60 children enjoyed a waterslide, face-painting, a Bible Story time, a craft, a hunt for lollipops and a hot dinner, including ice-cream donated by the local Cheeseman.

New Soccer Net for VOH Kenya

IMG_0011

VOH Kenya children are busy playing soccer on a brand new soccer net donated by a very generous couple! The kids have been spending a good portion of their spare time practicing in the field with the new net and are ready to start forming teams. This is absolutely wonderful for the children as they practise their skills, learn to play in teams, and play a sport they are so passionate about!
